Background. Depressive symptoms during and after pregnancy are the main cause of the disability associated with diseases among women. The prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) is 18%. Depressive symptoms during and after pregnancy are associated with adverse outcomes for both mother and infant. Objective of the study. To study the role of vitamin D3 in the development of postpartum depression. Material and Methods. This systematic review was performed by accessing and analyzing the MEDLINE and Hinari databases. The key words that stood as a search engine were: postpartum depression, post delivery depression, postnatal depression, the role of vitamin D in postpartum depression. A total of 239 studies were identified; of all these studies, only 14 studies were included in the review. Results. A total of 175 studies were identified from the combined search and after removing duplicates 98 were reviewed, based on titles and abstracts. Finally, 14 of them were selected for full review. The prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) is 19%. Low vitamin D levels (<47 nmol / L) were associated with an increase in the chances of developing DPP at three days postpartum, and higher levels of vitamin D were associated with a decrease in the chances of developing DPP at three months postpartum, as well as symptoms reduced to one week, six weeks and six months postpartum. Conclusion. In summary, based on the evaluation of the literature, there may be an association between vitamin D and the increased risk of depressive symptoms during and after pregnancy. Author suggest that pregnant and postpartum women be screened for Vitamin D deficiency. |
