Background. Polytrauma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. This term is used to describe patients with trauma, whose injuries involve several regions or cavities of the body that can compromise the integrity of internal organs, extremities, and soft tissues. Objective of the study. The purpose of this study is improving the diagnosis, specifying the indications and time of the intervention, selecting the surgical approach, the optimal fixators with the specification of functional recovery tactics in polytrauma patients. Material and Methods. A bibliographic study of 11 scientific articles relevant to these topics published during the years 2017-2020 was conducted, using the PubMed database and the following keywords: Polytrauma, DCO, ATLS. Results. Following the retrospective analysis of several articles, we noticed that the mortality rate in poly-traumas in the elderly population was more than twice as high as in the adult population, approximately 19% at 40 years compared to 50% at 65 years, which indicates that the elderly population has an increased risk of mortality. Around 16,000 people in the world die every day as a result of trauma (5.8 million deaths per year) and the forecast for 2020 shows that 8.4 million deaths are expected this year. Over 70% of all patients with major trauma need at least one orthopedic surgical procedure. Conclusion. Polytrauma remain a serious and current problem in the world, which requires a efficient collaboration of the multidisciplinary team, and "Damage Control Ortophedic" allows us to use different types of fixatives in primary osteosynthesis in polytraumatized patients |
