Single crystalline samples of HgCr2S4 grown by chemical transport reactions were studied at room temperature using X-ray difraction. The results show the stoichiometric composition and the absence of impurities. Magnetization measurements revealed strong ferromagnetic fluctuations close to 60 K and the appearance of complex antiferromagnetic order at temperature TN = 23 K. Also, the saturation magnetization MS = 5.83 µB, was detected, a value which are in good agreement with theoretic value MS = 6 µB, for two ions of Cr3+ in 3d3 state. From the temperature dependence of the inverse of susceptibility the effective magnetic moment peff = 3.78 µB, and the CurieWeiss temperature ΘCW = +144 K have been calculated. We found that the appied external magnetic field suppresses the antiferomagnetic order and strongly enhance the feromagnetic corelations. |
