Background. The aging process of the population is inevitable. We all finally reach the age of seniority. Unfortunately, the elderly face economic and social difficulties, many health problems, but the most they are affected by helplessness, loneliness, indifference of relatives and society. Objective of the study. Studying the phenomenon of old age in the conditions of the Republic of Moldova from a sociobioethical point of view. Material and Methods. The research was based on the national and international specialized literature in the field of sociology and bioethics which addresses the topic of senectitude. The statistical data that is characteristic to the Republic of Moldova were analyzed. The following methods were used in the study: bioethical, analytical, statistical, sociological, comparative. Results. The main social and bioethical problems faced by the elderly were highlighted, following the analysis of the specialized literature and statistical data such as demographic indices, retirement age, outpatient records. The most common chronic diseases detected are: high blood pressure, post-stroke sequelae, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, dementia. It was found out that the bioethical principle of autonomy is violated, as decisions about health are made more by family and doctor, and the principle of justice is as well infringed, because the attitude towards seniors is often disrespectful and the time given to an elderly person during the consultations is limited. Conclusion. Following the research, we have established that the situation of seniors in the Republic of Moldova is deplorable. The pressing problems they face are: low pension, chronic diseases, loneliness, helplessness. These factors are causing depression and worsening of health. |
