Background. The literature review delimits the determinants that are considered to influence body weight gain in several categories, such as: developmental determinants, genetics, age, ethnicity, lifestyle (physical activity, diet, unhealthy habits), environmental and social. Objective of the study is to study the relationship between respondents’ smoking behaviour and the body mass index (BMI) values. Material and Methods. Research methods used in epidemiology and biostatistics was applied for the study. The sample of the study included 1200 adults over the age of 18 from urban and rural areas in the Republic of Moldova. Results. BMI index within the obese range, analysed depending on the residence environment, was registered in 24,1% of cases among smoking respondents who smoke living in urban areas compared to 39,3% of cases among those living in rural areas (p <0,01). According to sex-disaggregated data, BMI index within the obese range was observed in 36,6% among smoking men compared to 16,4% among smoking women(p<0.001) .The highest share of BMI index within the obese range was observed among smokers in the age group over 60 years with 62,3%, followed by those aged between 50 and 59 years with 44,4% (p<0.001). Conclusion. The highest share of BMI index within the obese range was observed among smoking men in the age group over 60 years (62.3 ± 9.50%) living in rural arears. |
