Background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune systemic disease characterized by erosive, destructive arthritis and possible damage to other organs. Osteoporosis is known to be a common manifestation of RA. However, the decrease in bone mineral density in RA is underestimated and untreated. Objective of the study. To determine the status of bone mineral density in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Material and Methods. 95 patients with rheumatoid arthritis admited consecutively in the Rheumatology department of CRH Timofei Moșneaga in 2019 were studied. All patients were examined clinically and pacaclinically. Dual X-ray absorption was performed to determine the condition of bone tissue, osteoporosis was diagnosed according to WHO criteria. The data obtained were statistically analyzed. Results. 84 (88.4%) of the examined patients were women and 11 (11.6%) were men. The mean age of the examined persons was 58.2 ± 9.5 years. 82.1% of the examined women were postmenopausal. Anong studies patients 80% were positive for rheumatoid factor and 88% were positive for anti-CCP antibodies. Osteoporosis was diagnosed in 37.9% of patients, osteopenia in 29.5% and in 32.6% normal bone mineral density was determined. In the analysis of patients with osteoporosis, 33.3% of them had severe osteoporosis due to the presence of compression fractures and 8.3% due to a fracture of another location. Conclusion. Bone pathology is common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It is necessary to perform assessment of bone mineral density in rheumatoid arthritis for the early detection of the pathology and early treatment application. |
