The 1971 is the year that marks the irreconcilable rupture between the writer Paul Goma and the communist regime, but also between the writer and the literary-cultural world dependent on a conformity dictated by ideological commands. This year, the Security opened the investigation file on Paul Goma’s name (march), following repeated attempts to publish uncensored novels in the country, which eventually appeared in the West. The 1971 is also the year of the July Theses issued by the Ceausescu regime (following the model of the Asian cultural revolution); the year in which Ostinato, Goma’s first novel, appeared in translation in Germany, a milestone in the direct conflict with the communist regime. It was the year of the adoption of the Law on the protection of state secrets in the Socialist Republic of Romania. Until 1977, when Goma initiated the Human Rights Movement and was forced to take political refuge, a single book of short prose appeared in Romania (1968), his editorial debut. The situation remained unchanged until 1990. He was never forgiven by the communist authorities for the courageous act of publishing his novels in translation, „illegally”, in the free world. Security has worked for years to compromise and annihilate Paul Goma, both as a man and as a writer. |
