The distribution of alkaline (Na и K ) and alkaline earthy (Ca 2 и Mg2 ) cations
absorbed in subaerial deposits in Etulia Noue (Moldova) and sediments of freshwater lake
Samambaia (Brazil) was used to determine the environmental changes connected with climate
oscillations during the Quaternary. The geochemical data were used for the interpretation of drier
and wetter periods and were confirmed by palynological data in Moldova and by sponge spicules
in Brazil. The increase in alkaline earthy cations in sorption complexes corresponded to drier
periods, and on the contrary, the increase in alkaline cations indicate on more humid climate in
both studied regions. The use of ratio between alkaline and alkaline earthy cations may be very
useful for palaeoreconstructions of climate, especially for sediments where any fossil are absent.
