At the end of the World War I, Russia's ally, the Kingdom of Romania, occupied the southern Russian province of Bessarabia. This was made possible by the tragic combination of circumstances caused by the course of the Soviet government to withdraw from the war. The tasks of demobilization of the Romanian front, the preservation of Russian military property, the evacuation from Romania, fell on the shoulders of the staff of the Romanian front, headed by D. G. Shcherbachev. In the difficult conditions of the German and Romanian intervention, the collapse of the Russian active army, the beginning of the Russian civil war, he did everything possible. However, the price for the elimination of the front was the Romanian invasion of Bessarabia and its subsequent annexation by the Romanian Kingdom. |
