Rezumat

Public attitude toward homosexual people is a popular topic in both the popular press and academic journals. However, attitudes toward gay men and lesbians continue to reflect disgust, rejection, prejudices, and moral/religious disapproval. Using the linear multiple regression analysis, we examined the predictive power of several socio-demographic and dispositional variables, i.e. gender, age, education, religiosity, openness on conservatism-liberalism axis, social experience with homosexuals, importance attached to homosexuality as a socio-cultural and legal issue, conservative attitude toward sexuality, openness as a personality domain, and impression management. Attitude toward gay men and lesbians was the dependent variable. Participants were 267 Romanian university students (49 men and 218 women) aged between 18 and 47. There was no significant gender difference in attitude toward homosexuals. Participants’ education and the importance attached to homosexuality revealed also no significant effects. Being a conservative person, having a close relationship with a gay or lesbian person, religiosity, and the conservative attitude toward sexuality were positive/negative predictors of negative attitude toward homosexuals. These variables accounted for 2.1% – 11.7% of the variance in the attitude toward gay men and lesbians. Socio-cultural implications and limitations of our results are discussed.
