Background. As a burden of the most common chronic disease in children, pediatric asthma can lead to obesity by imposing physical activity restrictions and through complex inflammatory mechanisms, but pediatric obesity itself is one of the proven factors leading to bronchial asthma in children. Material and methods. The authors designed an analytic, retrospective, cross-sectional study, that included 80 children aged 7 to 14 years old, all residing within an urban community, without any objective physical limitations or disabilities, of which 30 (37.5%) had a history or current, established diagnosis of bronchial asthma, and 50 (62.5%) did not suffer of asthma. The entire group of recruited children completed the „Questionnaire for physical activity assessment in children” for the week previous to completion, each activity having been assigned by CDC a pre-established MET (metabolic equivalent). The BMI percentile for each child was calculated using the online calculator of the WHO. Statistical analysis of data: Microsoft Excel, tStudent test. Results. Among the entire lot of 80 children recruited, the prevalence of overweight/obesity in the lot of asthmatic children was 0.85 vs. 0.26 in non-asthmatic ones (PR=3.26, p=0.007). The calculated average weekly MET of asthmatic children had a value of 59.73 compared to 72.68 in non-asthmatic children (SE=9.34, F=1.13, p=0.0081), while the average weekly MET of asthmatic children with a BMI percentile>85 was lower compared to healthy-weight asthmatic children in the study group (56.375 vs. 64.0, F=5.86, p>0.005). Conclusions. Pediatric patients aged 7 to 14 years old with asthma had a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity compared to non-asthmatic children in the study group. Compared to their non-asthmatic peers, the physical activity of asthmatic children was more restrictive. |
