The purpose of the article is to contribute to the understanding of the concept of circular economy, its different dimensions, and the difficulties that small and medium enterprises experience in implementing specific activities. At European level, the contribution of small and medium-sized enterprises to job creation, growth, social stability and innovation is recognized and appreciated as essential to boost competitiveness. Recognizing the role of SMEs has resulted in a series of European initiatives to support the business aimed at identifying SMEs that have implemented the circular model so that they can then benefit from European measures and programs defined to support their development. In the process of achieving a European economy, SMEs and social enterprises have been recognized as particularly important, especially in terms of their contributions to activities such as recycling, repair and innovation. Also, the article presents the difficulties SMEs encounter in the process of the transition to the circular economy. The pace of the transition to the circular economy varies from country to country due to their different socio-economic levels and regional inequalities. At national level, the importance given to resource efficiency as a tool to promote sustainable development, as recognized in EU policy and in various Member State initiatives, has led to the need to assess the potential for resource cost reduction in firm’s business support for SMEs in Europe. |
