What politics means is an open question, but there is no doubt that politics is meaningful. Politics and language are inseparable. Political discourse is a discourse of influence aimed at influencing the audience to mobilize to act, to think, to consider etc. It is obvious that the linguistic reality grafted onto the political one, highlights the essential role of language, its field of manifestation, while the political outcomes are those based on which the selection operates both from terminology point of view and from that of discursive strategies of course. These ideas support the hypothesis that the language, discursive strategy and political strategy are interdependent. This article offers some theoretical perspectives on the study of language and politics, and provides an essential introduction to political discourse analysis. The paper will explore some responses to the seemingly naive question “What is Political Discourse Analysis?”. Instead of being normative, in the sense of wanting to prescribe what political discourse analysis should be, it rather aims to be programmatic in another, more analytical way, and try to provide some answers to the question what could be an adequate way of ‘doing’ political discourse analysis. |
