Rezumat

The names reveal the origin of the one who bears it, because the name is a code containing information about the social status, nature of character and occupation. A wrong spelling of a proper name can be fatal...The more a translator knows the author and their cultural context, the better the translation. In the majority of cases, the names cannot be translated, not even in the case when they are similar, due to their common origin in various languages. The names used by Tolkien come from the Norse culture and mythology and a great part of them was created by the author, who was a teacher of the English language and literature. The saga puts a stress on the horrible and gruesome creatures, that are depicted by Tolkien in a realistic manner. Reading the work, we had in mind the feeling that they were so alive, so close to the reality.
