Rezumat

In the post -Cold War period, particularly after the destruction of the Soviet Union, the boarders of the Black Sea region has been stable between the West and the East. The collapse of The Soviet Union that had a significant effect on the international system, caused crucial political, economic, social changes in the region and increased number of independent players around the basin. Today, the region is considered to be one the strategically important region as it plays the role of crossroad between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Due to its important role as a pivotal corridor between East and West-North and South and its value as the cornerstone of geopolitics, commerce, energy and culture the interests of four main actors: the United States, Russia, European Union, NATO is overlapped. Their keen interest is caused by the challenges, numerous opportunities and profitable future prospects of this dynamic area. In this context, this paper focuses on Caucasus region, identifies what is “Gateway Region” ,why geopolitics is so important in the globalized world and highlights strategic assessment of the Caspian Sea Basin Region.
