Rezumat

Throughout the 19th century Romanian culture was inspired, in large part, from the French culture. Great personalities from the Romanian literature have immigrated to France and studied there, enriching in this way, the French culture.  Among them Emil Cioran, Romanian philosopher and essayist, is worth being highlighted. Cioran was forced to go abroad, namely to France, because of the Communist regime in his native country. There he continued his literary activity and remained until the last moment of his life. Cioran became the France symbol of cultural and literary achievements. In his works, Emil Cioran tackles many themes inspired by thinkers, philosophers and French writers. This paper emphasizes the great philosopher and intellectual, Blaise Pascal, whom Cioran has admired a lot and thanks to whom, Cioran‘s first book in French was rewritten for four times, following the example of his literary idol who also rewrote his first work seventeen times. Cioran had believed that French writers of his time (the 19th century) had a high level of virtuosity, one which could be very difficultly reached for someone who came from abroad.  La Rochefoucauld and Chamfort are French moralists who were very respected by Cioran due to their writing style, which they both shared, but also due to the themes they treated in a skeptic way, quite painful but very close to the truth which is very close to Cioran‘s style and themes as well. Emil Cioran admired also Montaigne‘s skepticism, the bitterness of La Bruyère‘s writings, and shared the same ideas with the great French writer Valery, thus, creating a true literary heritage thanks to which, after the fall of the Communist regime, Cioran was considered a national hero in his native country.
