Respiratory Disorders in Obese Children
Obesity in children is classified according to a standardized percentile of body-mass index by age and sex. Obesity implies the existence
of numerous comorbidities, the respiratory ones being the subject of this study. Even today, the obesity-asthma relationship is the subject of
controversy: overdiagnosis of asthma in obese children, the difficulty of assessing the severity of asthma in terms of questionnaires given to
obese patients, obesity - epiphenomenon of asthma. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs in more than 60% of preschool- and school-aged children.
Nevertheless, obstructive sleep apnea is considered part of obesity-hypoventilation syndrome. It draws attention to the difficulty of determining
the level of severity of apnea in obese children (apnea events shorter, but more common in children). Obesity-hypoventilation syndrome occurs
with a frequency of 1-3% among obese children. Finally, the paper presents the postoperative pulmonary complications in obese children. |
