Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease, characterized by progressive bone mineral loss, increased bone fragility and susceptibility to low-energy fractures. Until the development of fragility fractures, the patients are mostly asymptomatic, the screening process relying heavily on fracture risk assessment tools. Among them FRAX is considered to be one of the most reliable, with a net superior informativity. Nevertheless, due to a high variation of fragility fracture incidence in different geographical areas, country-specific FRAX models are required to assess fracture risk in a certain population. Objective: the purpose of this study is to study the incidence of fragility fracture in a defined catchment area from Republic of Moldova in order to develop a country-specific FRAX tool. Results: since November 2016, a country specific fracture risk assessment tool is available in the Republic of Moldova. |
