The use of ACE inhibitors in the treatment of children with congenital heart malformations
ACE inhibitors are largely used in cardio-vascular diseases in children and adults. The
evolution of congenital heart malformation in children inevitably leads to the progressive
development of heart failure. This necessitates immediate treatment even with new born babies. The aim of this study was the clinical evaluation of patients with congenital heart malformation and heart failure treated with ACE inhibitors. The results of this retrospective study showed that in more than half of the patients haemodynamic response improved: the frequency of cardiac contraction decreased in 57% of patients with tachycardia, respiratory frequency decreased in 48.3% of patients. The combined treatment using ACE inhibitors contributed to the amelioration of the degree of heart failure at the point of discharge with statistically significant results, from 3.85 ± 1.5 on admission versus 2.05 ± 1.25 on discharge, p<0.05.
