Rezumat

The germplasm of plants may be stored as a seed collection in gene banks or cryobanks. Gene bank conservation of plant seeds (at about – 20 °C and 7% residual humidity of seeds) is preferable to field conservation since climate change can affect the viability of on-farm conservation of landraces by changing the environmental conditions so much that growing a crop in its centre of diversity becomes non-viable and leading to its „extinction‟ in particular regions or agroecosystems. However, both germination rate and biochemical indeces such as enzyme activities of conserved seeds are altering with time.
