The impact of gastroesophageal reflux in the pathogenicity of laryngeal diseases
Anatomico-pathological peculiarities of the larynx and proximal esophagus make this
area rather vulnerable to injury. This is particularly true for the gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Chronical laryngeal signs and the GER-associated symptoms are defined as reflux laryngitis or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and are characterized by hoarseness, sorethroat and chronic cough. LPR is usually diagnosed on the basis of the developed symptoms and associated signs, these including laryngeal edema and erythema, but also on a number of paraclinical instrumental diagnostic procedures. The treatment varies with the severity of the disease, lifestyle, food regimens, medicinal treatment with H2-, H1-blockers and prokinetics. Still, surgical treatment is only indicated in life-threatening cases such as laryngeal stenosis and paroxysmal laryngospasm. The main factors that made the 2 entities associate were: etiology absence of chronical laryngeal symptoms and alleviation, even disappearance, of laryngeal disturbances as a result of the antireflux treatment applied. |
