Various unfavourable environmental conditions lead to an excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which results in a progressive peroxidation of lipids, oxidative damage of chloroplasts, inhibition of photosynthetic processes, and ultimately limits the agricultural productivity or death of cells. Efficient scavenging of ROS produced during environmental stress caused by droughts requires the action of several enzymic antioxidants present in the tissues. In this paper, we describe the effect of the coordination compound [Co(DH)2(Thio)2]NO3 (coditiaz) on the induction of antioxidant defense in plant leaves in response to drought stress. Maintenance of high antioxidant capacity to scavenge toxic ROS strongly correlates with increased tolerance of plants to dehydration conditions. Considerable effect of coditiaz treatment on plant productivity has been established. |
