The parvenu is a representative character of the transition period from one kind of society to another. The Thruster pervades the literature of the nineteenth century, starting in French literature with Balzac, Sthendal, moving on to Maupassant. The series of parvenu portraits in Romanian literature is opened by Dinu Paturica who is the protagonist of Ciocoii vechi si noi by Nicolae Filimon. After him came Duiliu Zamfirescu’s Tanase Scatiu and later in the interwar period also Lica Trubadurul (H. Papadat-Bengescu), Tanase Vasilescu Lumanararu (Camil Petrescu), Stanica Ratiu (George Calinescu) and others. Literary typology of literary parvenu is an artistic expression of the phenomenon which is historically linked to all the radical changes that mark transition from feudalism to capitalism and traditionalism to our accelerated pace of modern life.
