Nowadays television plays an extremely important role in society and in the daily life of every individual, and the modern world cannot be conceived without the omnipresence of TV broadcasts. Television companies, through the products offered – news, films,
cognitive and entertainment programs, talk-shows, public debates etc. – aim to attract a large audience using various techniques in order to capture the viewer and to raise their rating.
In the complicated and diversified audiovisual semiotic system language has one of the major roles because it is the linguistic code that contributes to the comprehension of the information presented and is practically the most important factor that determines the choice of the target audience. Therefore, television companies adapt their linguistic code to the requirements of a particular area audience so that the viewers can grasp the gist of the programs. There are several adaptation methods that are used on a on a more or less regular basis, but the most common of them are film dubbing and subtitling and voice-over in news programs (using a variety of techniques). For cinema productions, that cover a significant part of television program schedules, it is important that the ratio between the codes used be followed in the process of linguistic adaptation: word-picture, the code of the source language – the code of the target language, as well as the balance between the oral and the written speech. |
