This topic is widely discussed recently as there are contradictory opinions that interjections can render conceptual meaning. If an interjection is associated with a certain context it is able to render a conceptual meaning. We consider that depending on the type of the interjection it is either able to express conceptual meaning or not. Some interjections are primary, others are secondary. The later derived from other parts of speech so they can render the meaning inherited from the part of speech they were coined from. The primary interjections can express natural signals and linguistic signals. One of the reasons why interjections do not encode concepts is that they cannot be substituted by synonyms. The interjections which express natural signals have synonymic pairs so they encode concepts. The given study helps in clarifying certain things about English interjections with reference to their possibility to encode concepts. |
