Rezumat

This study is based on field studies realized in villages with compact residence of Old Believersin the Republic of Moldova. According to the traditional beliefs of the Old Believers, a person lives as long as he is allotted by God, and dies exactly as it was destined. The refore suicide is considered a great sin, a violation of the Law of God: “You have to live the life that God intended for you, cut off this piece of time for you”. In the case of suicides, the priest does not perform the appropriate rite; they are buried on the edge, in the corner of the cemetery, and earlier even behind its fence. Those people who carried the coffin with a suicide in the cemetery had to “take a prayer from the priest”, because even this was considered a sin. Among the folk signs there are those that represent the harbingers of imminent death. Often they are associated with birds, for example, a swallow beats against the glass of a window. Also, sometimes, a few days before death, the appearance of large flies in large numbers is noted from nowhere, something that has not been observed before. Informants also distinguish so-called “fatal dreams”, when a deceased relative insistently calls to him and can even actively pull; when a sleeper has a dream in which a house wallor stove collapses; when a person's tooth falls out in a dream, especially with blood – this means that a close, blood relative will die. According to informants, some features of human behavior in the near-death state make it clear that he will soon pass away. For example, he stops eating, and even if he wants to eat something, he is no longer able to do it –“he cannot swallow”. The informants spoke about the above-mentioned views, relying on their own experience and on the practices of their relatives and other villagers.
