Rezumat

People of modern Chisinau – including urban professionals – know little about the city’s urban development projects - not only in the 18th and the 19th centuries but also the 20th and even in the 21st . For example, there is still uncertainty about whether the city even existed in the 17th century. What it was on this area before Chisinau? Official opinion stating that it was a small village of 5-10 houses does not withstand argumentative critique supported by archaeological findings. The city’s 17-18th century morphological structure also poses questions. When was the current Old City network formed? What were urban planning intentions in different years? How were different stages of Moldova’s development reflected in urban development projects for Chisinau? How were historical city areas treated and viewed? The 1990’s transition to free economies brought radical changes to post-Soviet geographies across industries including urban planning and the way it functioned in the face of new realities. Moldova was no exception. Many projects were denied and terminated giving way to new ways to solve for cities’ needs. This article – although limited in length – is an attempt to answer all of the above questions, as well as to remind the people of Chisinau of the unrealized urban projects that could have dramatically influenced the image of the city as we know it today.
