The didactics of Romanian as a language of instruction denote a unilateral interest for proper nouns, merely limiting itself to some aspects of spelling and occasionally referring to specific paradigmatic forms. The circulation of proper nouns in didactic communication is, however, considerably wider, since some of these represent component parts of terms (formulae, theorems, laws etc.), place names of reference or names of historical periods in the context of Geography and History, or authors and titles in Literature and Arts. Despite an accepted opinion that proper nouns do not possess any perceptible semantics, they do undergo two stages of deciphering: when placed in a certain sub-class (anthroponyms, toponyms, cosmonyms, zoonyms etc.) and when being referred to the linguistic context they originate from. For an educated reader the proper nouns found in academic/scientific texts, borderline with domain terminology, will become bearers of socio-cultural information, which fits naturally into the linguistic communication competence. |
