The article deals with the issue of the functioning of languages in societies, their roles as an instrument of political power, of doctrinal manipulation. According to the author, language can only work on given socio-historical segments, in strict accordance with the culture, traditions and mentality of the time. Apart from being an instrument of communication, language is a political and social power. In the Republic of Moldova, the issue of national identity is of linguistic obedience. Following the Russian imperial occupation, and then the Soviet occupation, the current population of the Republic of Moldova still feels the aftermath: a confusion of identity expressed by the Moldovan-Romanian binomial who acquires contradictory, sometimes conflicting, tendencies at the level of society. The problem of the correct denomination of the official language in the Republic of Moldova is well known by its political context, having a turbulent history, going down in the night of the centuries. The official language spoken in the Republic of Moldova is Romanian – the same language spoken in Romania, the official language of the European Union. It is a reality also corresponding to a scientific truth, because, linguists know it well, there is no Moldavian language. However, the legal solution of this problem came about following a political initiative in 2013. The author of the article presents her own experience and contribution, as a member of the Moldovan parliament and as a linguist, to the constitutionalization of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova, on the model of the experience of France.
