Maternal and Child Health became the part of standard for family physicians professional training in 1998. The
skills of medical care for pregnant women and newborns carried out on the continuous medical education courses and
in the national projects on perinatology.
The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge of family physicians about the content of national clinical guidelines
for maternal and child health. The task was to identify the level of knowledge of doctors about the standards of medical care
to pregnant women and newborns, and to determine the usefulness of the questionnaire as a tool for assessment.
Material and methods. Quality Committee, acting under the Territorial Medical Association Botanica Chisinau
municipality, has developed a questionnaire for physicians and includes a section that refl ects the content of national
guidelines for maternal and child health.
Results and conclusion. The 88 family doctor survey has demonstrated a good level of knowledge about mother
and child care in this district. However, the need to continue the doctor’s training for a better knowledge of signs of lifethreatening
young child’s conditions and criteria for hospitalization of children with pneumonia is compulsory.
Training courses in the area of maternal and child health, in which included in the study doctors took part, helped
to strengthen their knowledge. The knowledge assessment is an available tool for future educational steps, planning
to improve the professional competence, which includes elements of self-esteem and self-education. Depending on the
results of a systematic assessment of the knowledge the Quality Committee may determine the planning of refresher
training of doctors, including the health of mother and child. |
