Topicality. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a condition which manifests with distressing physical, behavioral and
psycological symptoms, which regularly recurs during the luteal phase of each menstrual cycle. The precise aethiology
of PMS remains unknown. Symptoms of PMS are distinguished from normal physiological premenstrual symptomes
because they cause signifi cant impairment to daily activity. Because of the prevalenсe, chronicity and distress caused by
PMS, diagnosis and effective treatments are important information for clinitians. Objective of our study was to identify
the prvalence of Premenstrual Syndrome in women of reproductive age in the Republic of Moldova and its impact on
health-related quality of life, as there are no national data on this subject.
Materials and methods. A total of 292 females from urbal and rural area, aged 15-45 years with normal menstrual
cycle, no oral contraceptives users have participated in the study. The subjects were interviewed about demografi c
and socio-economic status, life style, general health, medical and reproductive history, premenstrual symptoms and
their impact on quality of life using structured and validated questionnaire. Mathematical methods for data processing
included statistical, correlation analysis, and estimation of odds ratios (OR) in confi dence intervals (CI) at the chosen
signifi cance of 95%.
Results. According to defi nition of American College of Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Royal College of Obstetricians-
Gynecologists we identifi ed four groups of women: Group I – no premenstrual symptoms (31 women – 10,6%),
Group II – premenstrual syndrome mild (164 women – 56,1%), Group III – premenstrual syndrome moderate (84 women
– 28,8% ) and Group IV – premenstrual symdrome severe (13 women – 4,5%). A sociomedical characterization
was complied for women of reproductive age with PMS. Typical psychological symptoms include iritability, depression
and feeling out of control; physical symptoms include dreast tenderness, bloating and headaches.
Conclusion. Quantitative assessment confi rms the high prevalence of PMS in women of reproductive age in the
Republic of Moldova, also it has negative infl uence for the daily activities and social relations. |
