In the given paper, we offer an overview on some relevant research of social status, presenting, as well, the results of investigation of the social status representation, realized in order to identify the opinion of the people on its indices, which will be used to formulate a questionnaire for further research. The experimental investigation, presented in the article, was realized in order to identify the representation of social status, its indices and role for different social categories. Accordingly, in the given research we verified two hypotheses: regarding the prevalence of objective aspects in the representation of social status; the second one – regarding the exposure to power attributes as being important for social status. The central core of social status – social belonging, money, social respect, family, social position – objectify its role and the vision on the most important attributes that establish and maintain it. The indices of social status are shaped in objective content related to socioeconomic wellbeing and power. The associations of peripheral system present more expressively the subjective aspects of social status – intelligence, democracy, moral integrity, social stability, love, job, social norms, empathy, social values, in comparison with objective aspects as house, education, studies, profession, that illustrate the adjustment of given representation to the social changing context. The associative terms of peripheral system present, from one side, the close historical period of the image of social status – the value of stability assured by having education, studies, profession, house, from other side – the establishment of new beliefs regarding the role of personal qualities in advancing the social hierarchy: high skills of communication, establishing relations with others, moral integrity of the person, prosocial attitudes. The results of this research have led us to establish the indices of social status, used to build a questionnaire of self-reporting in order to research the changes of social status of contemporary person.
