Information of public interest is produced and held by public institutions, from public money, ie taxpayers. It is a public good that belongs to everyone. When institutions restrict access to it, they must explain why they are doing it. In its simplest definition, democracy means the power of the people to influence the decisions of the state. Citizens elect their representatives in the organs of power, follow their activity, and then decide whether to let them lead or change them. For this model to work, citizens need to know how public power is exercised, how the resources they contribute to taxes are spent, or how those elected and those in public office fulfill their promises. In other words, without access to information, there is no democracy. |
