The article refl ects issues on the regulation and protection of the national onomastic fund. It contains the unsuccessful, sometimes deliberate and forced, modifications, imposed by the officials of the past regime. The article covers the concrete actions and measures that have been undertaken in order to restore and regulate the Romanian toponymy and antroponymy on scientific bases. In this context, there are made proposals regarding the improvement of the given situation, and namely: the adoption of a law on proper names; the strengthening of the activity of the Republican onomastics commission; the renunciation at the personal identification formula composed of three elements (name, surname, patronymic) and the anachronistic writing forms of toponyms and antroponyms (Belţî, Orgheev, Soroki, Kirtoka, Spatari, Tolmaci).
