Features of arterial hypertension associated to obesity in children and teen-agers
(Bibliography review)
Obesity has become a more important medical problem in children and teen-agers.
According to the report submitted by WHO-Europe in 2010, the prevalence of overweight in
children is estimated at 15 million children [21]. As consequences caused by childhood obesity
can be considered high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, left
ventricular hypertrophy, non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis, nocturnal obstructive apnea, orthopedic
and psychosocial problems. Although in the past was considered rare, primary hypertension in
children has now become more frequent in association with obesity and other risk factors, among
which may be listed: a family history of hypertension or ethnic predisposition to hypertensive
disease. In addition, obese children have a predisposition to three times more likely to develop
hypertension as opposed to non-obese children, increasing the risk of hypertension in children
throughout the range of body mass index, not simply a threshold effect [5]. Therefore, obesity in
children should be interpreted as a chronic disease that requires long term medical supervision,
primarily aimed at preventing obesity and its complications, including hypertension. |
