The assessment of bone mineralization in children with chronic disease
The purpose of this study was to determine the peculiarities of the bone mineralization in
children with intestinal malabsorption syndrome and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, highlighting
the impact of drugs on bone mass. The study included a total of 53 children, of whom - 26
children with intestinal malabsorption syndrome and 27 children with juvenile idiopathic
arthritis. They were hospitalized consecutively in gastrology and rheumatology sections of the
PMSI ICSDOSM and C during the period 2008-2009. The tibial and radial bone
osteodensitometry ultrasound examination was performed, which resulted in the following
parameters: speed of sound (SOS) through the bone expressed in m / sec, Z score (Z-score), that
represents the difference between patient’s SOS and SOS average in population of the same age,
sex and race expressed in units of D.S, and SOS percentile defined as percentile rank the patient
belongs, depending on age and sex.
Thus, it was finally determined that the reduction of bone mineralization is more frequent
and severe in juvenile arthritis, compared with intestinal malabsorption, reasoned by different
pathogenetic induction mechanisms. |
