Role of placenta in the development of obstetric and perinatal pathology
(Bibliographic review)
The birth of a healthy baby to term means a coordinated set of events in the development
of placental complex. The placenta is actively involved in the transport of nutrients to the fetus,
has both direct effects as well as indirect effects on fetal cardiovascular function and the
endocrine system of the mother and fetus. As such, a properly functioning placenta is essential
for normal fetal development and has the primary role of mediator in placental system. External
environment changes or alterations to normal placental function may induce changes in fetal
development and later having important consequences in cardiovascular morbidity, causes and
development of metabolic syndrome.
Understanding how the placenta mediates maternal influences will be critical to elucidate
the mechanisms of intrauterine development. This will permit assessment of diagnostic ant
therapeutic appropriate measures, both before and during pregnancy to improve placental
function and subsequently the health of the fetus, the child throughout life until the age of
adulthood. |
