Rezumat

Surface runoff modelling using GIS. Runoff is a dynamic process that depends on factors that vary both spatially and temporally. In order to evaluate the rate at which it is generated a modelling design in a GIS provides an ideal environment. Such an approach allows the storage, integration, analysis, and maintenance of large environmental data sets. It provides an efficient, cost effective technique that offers possibilities to investigate factors that influence the rate of runoff over a large area. The equation used in the Curve Number method was derived based on observations made on rainfall-runoff data collected over a long period of time from different sites in the United States making the approach empirical based. [2] The method was selected for this study because of its simplicity and the fact that it is not too demanding in terms of its data requirement. The availability of tabulated CN values (USDA, 1986), for a wide range of soil and land use/cover practices, considerably facilitated the application of this method.
