Rezumat | ||||||
The substratum of the Romanian language is a main element of this last born as a consequence of the bilingualism of the population of Dacia. Some tendencies of popular Latin were assimilated by the substratum during the period of bilingualism. The local pre-Roman elements, which we generally infer through a comparison with Albanian and by eliminating sub-sequent influences, make up the common Romanian language. Their evolution is identical with that of the Latin elements. Traces of the substratum are to be found in every section of the language not only in vocabulary but also in phonetics, grammar, word-formation, phraseology. Elements of mythology, ethnology etc. are attributed as well to the substratum. The contribution of women in maintaining several elements of the substratum (i.e.dialectal pronunciation, imprecations, enchantments, gestures, etc.) was recognised by many scholars from among which were the Romanian learned Dimitrie Cantemir, Bogdan Petriceicu-Hasdeu, Theodor Capidan and the French Antoine Meillet. |
