Religious monuments of MSSR had suffered most from the policies pursued by the Soviet regime in the field of cults, which resulted in mass closure of monasteries and churches. Being deserted, some of the most valuable church buildings had been destroyed at the insistence of local or central authorities, others were demolished in connection with the reconstruction of urban areas that didn’t take into account the need to preserve and place value upon ancestral heritage. But most of them were seriously damaged or destroyed with the passage of time, because weren’t used and repaired for decades.
