Rezumat

Various historical publications about Moldovan localities situated between the Prut and Dniester rivers contain information about old documents kept for a long time by the residents of these villages. Most of these documents were issued by the offices of princes of the Principality of Moldova (Tara Moldovei) until 1812, when the eastern part of the principality was annexed by the Russian Empire. During the century of Russian occupation that followed (1812-1918), the free peasant communities from Bessarabia used papers issued by Moldovan medieval rulers to prove their land ownership rights. In some villages, dozens of such documents have been found. Recently, a parchment dating back to the period of ruling of Stefan cel Mare has been found in the village of Rudi in northern of Republic of Moldova. The document has a seal and its date of issue is November 23, 1470. Yet, a close examination of the parchment shows that the document is not genuine and that in reality it is a fake document that was produced in the 19th century and that has similar features with the acts from the series of the so called fake Bessarabian documents. In the article below, the author has tried to assess the scientific significance of the parchment found in the village of Rudi and to reveal the importance of the forged documents in historical research.
