Background. In the EU, about 21% of fatal road accident victims are pedestrians. According to the WHO, 35% of children under the age of 17 die as pedestrians. In the Republic of Moldova, 465 road accidents involving pedestrians were registered, in which 50 people died. Objective of the study. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitudes regarding pedestrian safety among youth in Chisinau municipality. Material and Methods. An observational study was conducted among young students in Chisinau mun. in the period of September - November 2018, with application of the questionnaire "Knowledge and attitudes of pedestrians on road safety" consisting of 14 questions. Results. From the total number of respondents (260 young students aged between 18-31 years old) 38% cross the street at red and 63% cross the street in forbidden places. Respondents listen to music through headphones while crossing the street (32%), do not wear reflective clothing at night (71%) or walk on the street because of cars parked on the sidewalks (33%). Respondents are not satisfied in 12% with ensurence of the street lighting, in 26% with the volume and speed in traffic and in 24% they do not feel safe as pedestrians. In road accidents were involved 25% of the respondents, of them: pedestrians - 3%, passengers in different types of transport - 21%. Conclusion. Pedestrian safety in road traffic is a very actual issue, which involves a multisectoral approach, and this study showed that pedestrians do not feel safe on the streets in the capital. Respondent's knowledge regarding pedestrian safety is not fully respected. |
