The concept of development communication is promoted since the 1950s by several agencies within the United Nation’s system, the American Agency for International Development (USAID) and international bodies such as the World Bank, as a tool for transforming the traditional societies of developing countries. The concept derives from theories of development and social change and generally refers to the implementation of strategies and communication principles in the context of developing countries. This study aims to give an overview of the concept of development communication and a retrospective outlook on the evolution of this concept, analyzing the reasons why this area has become crucial for development initiatives and its potential to contribute to stimulating sustainable development more efficiently. Th e main idea of the study relates to the development communication as a foundation for awareness, building consensus and generating participation within change and development processes. Society development cannot have a solid and sustainable basis if citizen participation is not at the heart of the development process. The current need for education within development communication, which is manifested both at European and world level, represents an opportunity to take over and use the concept in the context of the Republic of Moldova. Development communication could be viewed from this perspective as a function of public management that has the potential to create a favorable climate for the development of local communities by raising citizens’ trust and participation and transparency and accountability by authorities. |
