Developing through self-creativity, the blues has evolved and reached refined patterns while contributing to the appearance of all musical genres that subsequently appeared: jazz, pop, funk, country, etc. The music we today call blues emerged from the suffering of the black slaves working on plantations and subsequently expressed a special and unique mood that oscillated from sadness to the joy of expressing the bitter experiences of life through music. Historically, the blues was born in the Mississippi area from the rudimentary slave “songs” of the “field hollers”. From joy to sadness, no other form of music conveys authentic emotions so well. After the Civil War and the emancipation of the slaves, the blues spread towards the urban territories, where it got a new coloring and became a very popular music style. It was not long after, that it exceeded the American borders, giving birth to a substantial group of musicians who created new and various musical structures together with the appearance of many forms emerging from the initial fixed pattern (Jump Blues, Boogie-Woogie, Chicago Blues, Cool blues, Canadian blues, Hokum blues, Soul blues, Piedmont blues, etc.) Based on unlimited improvisation, the blues represents one of the most creative musical forms, both in terms of artistic performance and the development of other musical genres. Most of the times, the blues is perceived more as intense life experience than as a musical style, because what it transmits is the fruit of practically limitless artistic creativity, which in turn represents the most important artistic feature of the genre. |
