The onomastic investigations in the Republic of Moldova have mostly been conducted at the Institute of Philology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (former Institute of Language and Literature, Institute of Linguistics), starting in the 1960s. The research has followed two main directions: toponymy and anthroponymy. Several monographs, dictionaries, guides, atlases, maps, doctoral theses, scientific articles and thematic collections, abstracts and reports presented at various national and international scientific forums have been published based on collected and systematized data, TV or radio programmes have disseminated the scientific results in the field of onomastics, etc., orthographic norms and norms for the transcription of proper names have been developed.

Les investigations onomastiques de la République de Moldavie ont été réalisées, pour la plupart, à l’Institut de philologie de l’Académie des sciences de Moldavie (l’ancien Institut de langue et littérature, l’Institut de linguistique), à partir des années ’60 du siècle passé. La recherche s’est organisée sur deux directions principales: toponymie et anthroponymie. En base des éléments de fait recueillis et systématisés, on a publié plusieurs monographies, dictionnaires, guides, atlas, cartes, thèses de doctorat, articles scientifiques dans des revues de spécialité et des recueils thématiques, résumés et rapports, présentés à divers forums scientifiques nationaux et internationaux, on a fait des émissions de popularisation des résultats scientifiques du domaine de l’onomastique à la radio et à la télé, etc., on a élaboré des normes orthographiques et de transcription des noms propres.
