Rezumat

The concept of religious tourism has developed from understanding the tourists’ motivation. The difference between this form of tourism and the other is the tourists’ religious motivation. Religious tourism still has a significant share in the total tourist flow (26%). Its share might be even greater in the world, but the registered number of tourists isn’t accurate enough, so we don’t know it exactly. Religious tourism is the kind of tourism that aims visiting religious buildings with some spiritual implications. From this point of view one cannot clearly distinguish between those who visit these places being religiously or otherwise motivated. The impact of their visit might not be a religious one. There are two trends in religious journeys: those whose only purpose is the tourist motivation and those that combine it with the cultural motivation. The multitude of motivations is explained by the complexity of the modern mankind. We identify the following forms of religious tourism in Moldova: visiting sacred monuments and shrines, cultural and religious places, religious destinations when certain events are celebrated, sightseeing tours and camps for young people. Religious tourism is a form of tourism that exists for centuries and still retains some pilgrimage traits, but at the same time it has evolved tremendously. Nowadays religious tourism requires some training and a high degree of culture that will allow the tourists to admire cultural and religious objects in terms of architecture, construction, value, spiritual significance and content of art works.
