Rezumat

The magnetic investigations of potassium holmium double tungstate KHo(WO4)2 have been performed. The results of measurements of magnetic susceptibility and magnetization as a function of temperature (T from 0.5 K up to 140 K) and magnetic field (up to 2T) are presented. A strong anisotropy of magnetic properties was found. The attainment of saturation of temperature dependence of a magnetic susceptibility along all three magnetic axes of KHo(WO4)2 is observed at temperature below 1 K. The temperature dependences of a return susceptibility show that value of constant Curies are negative for all three magnetic axes. It shown that the interactions between nearest neighbors Ho3+ ions have antiferromagnetic character. The measurements of field dependence of magnetization along a, b and c of axes are made. The nature of the received dependences corresponds to a paramagnetic state. The small hysteresis at applied of an external magnetic field along a magnetic axis is observed. Thus there are no certificates of existence of magnetic order state in this substance. In the KHo(WO4)2 crystals under influence of the low symmetry crystal field all the energy levels of the Ho3+ ions are singlets [1]. In magnets with energy singlets, an unusual magnetic behavior is expected and it is difficult to predict the characteristics of magnetic ordering. The criterion for the appearance of a magnetically ordered state in thesematerials within two-level singlet–singlet approximation is the fulfillment of the relation I > δ, where I is the exchange integral and δ is the energy gap [2]. In KHo(WO4)2, the distance between the two lowest singlets and higher energy levels exceeds by far δ. Both the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization do not demonstrate any magnetic ordering. This suggests that the condition |I| > δ is not fulfilled. [1] M. Borowiec, M. Watterich A., Zayarnyuk, T., D’yakonov, V., Majchrowski, A., Zmija, J., Bara ski M., Szymczak, H.
