The aim of our study is to characterize cases of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) in terms of clinical onset, degree of activity, endoscopic and morphological appearance. The study group included 41 patients admitted to the Department of Gastroenterology, Institute of Mother and Child Care within 2010-2012. The main complaint of patients with UC was rectoragia in 94.5%, followed by diarrhea in 55.56%, associated with the febrile syndrome in 27.77%. Patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease presented diarrhea in 100%, and there was weight retardation in 80%. Abdominal pain was characteristic for both children with UC in 75%, and children with Crohn’s disease in 80%. Clinical activity was assessed according to the indices of activity PUCAI and PCDAI. Endoscopic lesions characteristic of UC were: hyperemia, edema, change of the vascular pattern, mucosal friability, spontaneous bleeding, contact bleeding, single and multiple ulcers. Crohn’s disease exhibited: change of the vascular pattern, contact bleeding, aphthoid ulcerations, follicles, cracks. Histological examination revealed the predominance of neutrophils in the lamina propria, mucus production, focal hemorrhages, cryptal atrophy. |
