On December 11, 1718 the 300th anniversary of the death of the Swedish king Charles XII was marked, one of the Sweden great national heroes. After losing the Poltava battle against the tsar Peter I, the Swedish king was forced to take refuge with the rest of his army in the Ottoman Empire, in Tighina (Bender), on the banks of the Nistru river where he remained under the protection of Sultan from the summer 1709 till February 1713. In Swedish army during the regency of Charles XII, numerous Romanians struggled as well (1700–1718), a theme treated in this article. |
