Puterea benefică a inimii era combinată adesea cu cea a talismanului Nazar boncuğu („ochiul Fatimei”, „ochiul norocos”, „ochiul rău”, „ochiul albastru”).

The mysterious sign of the labyrinth as the network of winding roads with the Supreme Center belongs to the category of protective signs, existing in the fortresses of the Moldavian Principality. A protective signs as a version like the Egyptian hieroglyph “shelter” or the Greek meander existed on a petroglyph of the Bender fortress and set in a courtyard between two bastions. The next protective sign is a hook considered as very strong one. It reminds the Latin letter “S” and represents an ancient decorative motif, being present in architecture, ceramics, ornaments, clothing and so on. It’s regarded as a strong sign which could guard against the evil eye. In the Romanian space this sign is known as the “shepherd’s hook” or “choka”, which is believed to defend against the “the devil eye”. A protective sign like “S” was on the entrance to the Hotin fortification. A sign heart refers to the group of ancient protective symbols. With time, the real representation of the heart has been replaced by the stylized one that we find in art, architecture and various epigraphic sources. An old sufi symbol is “winged heart” or “flying heart”. In Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Armenia the heart power is often combined with the Nazar boncuğu talisman, which protects from the “toxic” looks and negative energies. This original sign is also existed in the Moldavian Principality. Earlier in the Hotin fortress three heart-shaped signs could be seen there as two ones with Nazar boncuğu and the third sign was without an eye. All of these signs could be some emblems of the Janissary ortas situated in the fortresses. There were also the guard zoomorphic sculptures in the Moldavian Principality. The capitol in the form of a monkey’s head was preserved once in one of the halls of the Ruling Fortress of Suceava.
